What a Week!

It's been a busy month for me since early October, and a packful week just the most recent one (the 1st Global Entrepreneurship Week/Malaysia - 17th until 23rd of November 2008, which I co-hosted especially in Penang, Malaysia) that I could barely write much about anything. But they say "pictures are worth a thousand words each" (or so), so, here are my 300,000+ words (enough?):-



Though, I have always been microblogging on twitter, facebook, topix etc. including for "The Week" itself, so, this blog had never really been dried of feeds.

Penang Technopreneur Dialogue & Web 2.0 Sharing Session @ Bayview Hotel, Georgetown (1feb08)

This will be the first event of its kind in Malaysia specifically on Web 2.0 & RubyOnRails development platform, in addition to the many Technopreneur Forum/dialog over the past couple of years. At least a hundred web-enthusiasts, technopreneurs, ICT graduates, academicians are expected to congregate in Penang and share knowledge as well as concerns on the road-ahead vision on web & technopreneurship development arena especially in the northern region of Malaysia covering the states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak (northern), which were recently grouped under North Corridor Economic Region (NCER) for balanced and progressive overall development.

This event has been initiated and funded by Multimedia Development Corporation Malaysia (MDeC - the government agency overseeing the Multimedia Super Corridor initiative), and is to be co-hosted and co-organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and InvestPenang Berhad.

A long time technopreneur who's now taking the key operations of technopreneur development at MDeC, Mr Roslan Bakri Zakaria, in his capacity as General Manager of TeDD-MDeC, having had a personal crash overview of Web 2.0 revolution through visits to Web2Expo San Francisco & Tokyo just last year, will spark the fire which hopefully will continue to burn and push technopreneurs to embrace the information revolution (2nd generation, supposedly) that's taking over the world especially since "You" has been named as the TIME Magazine Person of the Year in 2006.

Web 2.0 enthusiasts including Nasir (ICTpenang.net & Pajamanation Malaysia) and Azrul Hasni (a Java "sifoo" who's now with BillAdam as its CTO) will then take the floor to share their own personal experience and observations.

Master developers including KhaiLee (Mindvalley) and Kamal Fariz (Ruby Brigade) will then share their technical expertise and visions on web development trend and strategies.

After some wild ride on buzzwords and codes, and a good Friday afternoon rest, we'll get back to reality on funding for tech projects. Mr Colin Wong (Seattle-based Prosperati) along with Ashran Ghazi (NEF), Lilyana Latif (Asiastream), and Rizal Azwani (Cradle) will share with the attendees, some insights on funding or getting funded for their bold projects.

Well, I know I'm a nerd (and proud of it), but I'd like to think that I'm not the nerdiest of people. And looks like I'm right: 2% other people who took the test are nerdier than me!

It's good to know though that being a nerd is not longer as bad as in the 70s (as portrayed in 80s and older movies) and earlier when these individuals constantly get laughed at all the time: Einstein, Newton, Stephen Hawkings etc. to name a few of today's big names in science. Today, some of the richest people, both seniors and freshies are some of the nerdiests: William H Gates III (one of the biggest philantropists out there too, and one-time TIME Person of the Year, side-by-side with U2's Bono not too long ago), the Googleaires pair, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, the two Yahoo!s, Linux's Torvalds, Apple's Steves (Jobs is now the biggest individual shareholder of Disney!) and many more today's cool and filthy rich guys especially those in the ICT/computer industries.

Heck, last year, TIME even named 'YOU' (nerds who came up with user-generated content on YouTube and millions other websites.) as its 2006 Persons of the Year...

Wanna be rich and cool?

Be a nerd (and entrepreneurial)!

Eid Adha teaches us sacrifice, thankfulness and care, ie. humanity

To quote the Khatib (deliverer of Khutbah speech during Muslim prayers every Friday afternoons and during Eid al-Fitri and al-Adha) who gave a speech after Eid morning prayer today:

"... we sacrifice animals during al-Adha beginning after this khutbah and until the third day of Eid al-Adha, from 10 until 13 ZULHIJJAH 1428H (20-23dec07), to symbolize sacrificing negative animal instincts and acts that may have stained or will continuously stain us throughout the year (greedy, murderous, lazy etc), and embrace human aspects more: helping and caring of others, offer food for the needy of the community, offer friendship with all human beings etc and be humble - thankful through zikr and prayers, e.g. joining takbeer sessions etc."
