The reawakening of WoNoJo

A 10-day research project on 3rd generation of social media (web 3.0), while talking craps and taken two days of vacation (outstation)... but in the same time, doubling followers in 18 days - Amazing isn't it? (not phenomenal, but good enough). And I haven't even started any viral/MLM experiments yet...

Imagine if I had started optimizing these social media tools for many years now (I first blogged nearly 10 years ago, and started to specifically use twitter over 18 months ago)

Stay tuned for my book soon... (while I push out at least TEN parallel new media brands in just two weeks)

BTW, I wonder if there's a tracker/grapher for facebook social circle growth too...

What a Week!

It's been a busy month for me since early October, and a packful week just the most recent one (the 1st Global Entrepreneurship Week/Malaysia - 17th until 23rd of November 2008, which I co-hosted especially in Penang, Malaysia) that I could barely write much about anything. But they say "pictures are worth a thousand words each" (or so), so, here are my 300,000+ words (enough?):-

Though, I have always been microblogging on twitter, facebook, topix etc. including for "The Week" itself, so, this blog had never really been dried of feeds.

Plus, I did put up so posts on blogs that I co-produce: ICT Penang and Kelab Usahawan Sosial Balik Pulau (KUSbp)

All red here on 1 Syawal 1429H

The favorite colours here were RED (shown above by the beauties who visited my house yesterday - the one in pinkish dress if my niece, and the rest are part-time model wife of my cousin and her offsprings) and green here in Balik Pulau, Penang (CLICK FOR OUR GREETING CARD!), when we celebrated the 1st of Syawal month of Islamic calender. It's the celebration of Eidul Fitri al-Mubarak for over a Billion Muslims around the world including some nearly 20-million in Malaysian and over 200-million more in neighboring countries of Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and Singapore.

Happy Syawal to all, and my best wishes to all who celebrate this joyous season of strong brotherhood, friendship, unity and forgiveness. World Peace! (me being a beauty queen/Miss World contestant).

Sifoos of Design congregrate in KL

About 150 or more Malaysia-based digital graphic (master) designers and/or enthusiasts who call themselves "sifoorians"* will congregate at Microsoft Auditorium at Level 29 of Kuala Lumpur City Centre (Petronas KLCC Tower 2) this morning...

I first registered in its forum back in 2003, but this will be my first time meeting fellow Sifoorians or the group's activities (Hmm.. I missed the chix buffet!! Hehe, but 'been to Hartz's before... and banyak gak awek cun yer dlm design community!). Am not much of a designer though, but I marvel at the beautiful artworks these geniuses come up with all these years...

The highlights of the event has got to be Microsoft's bold entrance to endear with the creative community with its Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF, formerly code-named "Avalon") and Microsoft Silverlight (Hmm.. I didn't get to check that one somehow during Web 2.0 Tokyo because Microsoft's demo hall was quite exclusive from the rest of the expo vendors, but friend Rico must know much about this after some good photo snaps with them Jap ala-F1 girls). Microsoft's Rohan Thomas will showcase what Microsoft has in store for graphic professionals and amateurs, including MS Expression Studio (a successor to MS Frontpage, written using WPF itself) I suppose.

MICROSTATUS: It's 5 o'clock in the morning, and I'm blogging this after a brief power nap. Looks like I have to start packing as my flight is just two hours from now, and the Penang International Airport is some 30 minutes from my house after brazing some sloppy hills (Urgh, can't someone bring a mini airport here to Balik Pulau??). Will land at Subang airport the first time in twelve years -- the last time I was there was in 1995 during a short holiday from the United States, after which I've been touchdowning at KLIA-Sepang (and LCCT-Sepang) after all flights both international and domestic for Kuala Lumpur were moved to there. (Why, oh why, was AirAsia refused access to Subang, but when the government-owned Malaysia Airline wants the old airport for its Firefly, the new low-cost subsidiary, the approval seemed no-brainer?)

To fellow Sifoorians, see you guys at Microsoft-KLCC today!

* "sifoo" or "sifu" in Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) means "teacher", and supposedly popularized in Chinese "kungfu" movies since back in the 80s with popular China/Hong Kong actors including Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

Pajamanation in 88 countries...

Pajamanation is making waves in 88 countries as of July 31, 2007. It is reaching some of the remotest areas including in the continents of South America, Africa, Asia etc. In Malaysia, we have reached all states and federal territories. Here's a 10-minute clip of a TV interview in Venezuela:-

It's in Spanish... More versions in English and Melayu coming up soon ;-)

100 Bloggers + 50 Tables + 1 'Celebrity' + Food + Prizes = Fun

I've just gotten back from meeting some 100+ bloggers & friends at the Food Loft-Gurney, practically the first 'official' gathering of bloggers of such size in Penang -- attended even by a reporter from The Star and graced by a bloggers' own web celebrity, Kenny Sia who had just hailed all the way from Kuching today. Took me a a full hour to reach Gurney Plaza at the northern-eastern tip of Penang, from Balik Pulau (and 40 minutes fast & furious drive back to 'the back of the island'), but it was worth it to see so many new acquaintances during the whole three hours at the Loft.

Although quite a number among the 100 'chosen ones' who signed up didn't manage to arrive, well over 100 brave souls showed up at the venue, many of whom perhaps finding out about the event through word of mouth instead of stumbling on the ad itself.

Unlike during the usual tech/geek meets around the country where people talk mostly about technologies, gizmos or other serious/business/political stuff, most 'Nuffnangers' & friends seem to be more into pure socializing and having some random laughters -- I didn't I see anyone with notebooks around even though the place is Wi-Fied despite a last-minute suggestion by Cedric to bring one for live-blogging (photo on the right, 'courtesy' of Cedric's blog... hmm, free service??). No videocams either (or I just didn't see anyone actively 'camwhoring', to quote Lance). The only high-tech gadgets were probably digital cameras and some flashy phones.

Guess, Penangites just prefer life to 'life online' (sometimes, that is!) -- Criz, when I asked if he was going home straight after the event, he said, "what else do bloggers do anyway?" I take it that he meant "mingling with strangers is fun, but staying home, with family or blogging/bitching online about people who you met or things you've seen everywhere would be no less nice." Hmm... seeing all the huge cinema banners, I figured catching a movie with lotsa strange friends would be nice (like NuffNang recently organized indeed), but the one I'd really like to see is not showing yet...

And not everyone there were pro or veteran bloggers. A number of attendees even acknowledged to be new bloggers, first taking up this adventurous activity only since early this month, or very few months earlier. Most whom I met told me that they blog about themselves, and just about anything that revolves around their daily lives. Serious bloggings like about arts, places, business, sciences, health etc. perhaps haven't infected average Malaysians, or may be there are in different groups altogether. For instance, I know of many cliques who are very much into politics, tech, and infopreneuring/internet marketing that also organize several exclusive meets among themselves. It's a chicken and eggs question I suppose -- Supply & Demand, which one should come first? Calvin whom I immediately recognized off his Blogname Tag, for instance, hinted that he has been getting more attention when talking about himself rather than about Penang!

As a reborn active blogger since just a couple months ago (I started blogging in 2000, but took a long 2+ years holidays), I could only recognize very few names and faces among the large crowd of attendees prior to coming to the event. I have never met any of them indeed! But practically all of them NuffNanged bloggers were warm and friendly, busily adding as many new friends to their already decent network of friends, both from the group of people who blog and the group who at least read blogs. Some of the fine bloggers I get to shake hands (and remember) were Jo Ann Phang & Chin (we shared the lunch table), Cedric Ang (passed the goodies around and interviewed Kenny I suppose -- he looks almost like a Malay, but he's Chinese + Thai as he explained on his Friendster profile. UPDATE (25jun07) -- CedricAng.com was hacked earlier today, forcing Cedric to immediately move to a another domain that was just registered days earlier, GoodBoyGoneBad.com -- a cool nick for the rising youth personality Cedric who also blogs in the Youth Section of CMC Media Network, which I suppose to be his take on another fine youth, Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad-titled album, but don't you think that the phrase sounds a bit pornographic?), Kenny Sia (he's a celebrity -- one of the very few Malaysians who have own entry on the Wikipedia!), Criz Lai (on the way to the payment counter), Kew (hmm.. warm & fuzzy? who stopped by our table), Calvyn, Warren, Bryan and of course the core NuffNangers including Lance (this dude escorted me to the table as it was my first visit there, I think!) and the two Tims (Timothy Tiah is one-half of the NuffNang founders; the other half is currently expanding their blogmunity empire from the island of Singapore down south) -- maybe if I'll surf around later, I'll remember some more or know how to spell their respective names correctly...

As usual, there were lotsa picture takings. Hmm... Did we won something in sports, blog contests, or anything?? And Kenny was earlier doing his usual stunts and gimmicks in due excitements for his dozens of 'fans'. I was hoping that people would have forced him to sing or do some other artistic talent show instead of him just putting all the smily faces throughout the restaurant. But sorry, no pictures from me... The guys at Nokia outlets in KL and Penang still lack of clues on how to fix my two-year old Nokia 6630, so, I've been camera-less for many months now which explains why this post gets to be too textual. Hope to see some pictures from them Penang bloggers (or Kenny from Kuching or wherever he would end up next) soon.

Three hours passed very quick indeed by the time we all called it quit. Those who pre-registered enjoyed up of RM15 of courtesy food. Those who didn't, well, bucked up... but the food there wasn't that expensive... Nice view overlooking Tanjung Bungah and the mainland through the glass window (priceless!), but perhaps, we should have more frequent freak storms in Penang to get a nicer seaside view!

As I've already max-ed out my 'first three hours' parking period, i knew I had to stick at Gurney Plaza a little bit longer and check Apple's Demos out at CGComputers situated at the third floor in Gurney Plaza. In fact, Kew was just telling me earlier on how he wants a MacBook badly off his blog earnings, if Adsense (or Nuffnang) would do wonders for him soon. Me too BTW! Who doesn't want a MacBook, the 24" iMac (that's damn huge!), or the Apple TV where you can iTunes using your TV and a special remote while Apple Xtreeming content including from your PC or Mac? These Apples gotta be dream machines for pajamaworkers!

UPDATE (1 JUL '07) - Here's one group photo I 'pinjam' from the pool of so many blog posts on the event:

Friendster-freak Malaysians embracing PerfSpot - the fastest-growing website in the world

Let's watch on another Web 2.0 company (or more specifically a social networking software) today... This one is boldly entering the turf that are already being dominated (and saturated) by the likes of Friendster (hot in Southeast Asia), Myspace (US-favorite), Facebook, Bebo (favorite in UK & Ireland) and tech giants like Google Orkut (Brazilian's choice), Yahoo 360 and MSN Spaces.

I first learned about Perfspot while taking care my editorial chores at Topix (another global web 2.0 leader in news aggregation field). Being a statsoholic that I am, I checked out Alexa reports for Perfspot, and by looking at its high rank, I instantly knew that I have to investigate this company -- one that I have surprisingly never heard of before. My instinct was right. This new company with a domain name that is no older than two years has taken the Internet by storm of epic proportion. After a comparatively very little growth since its inception month until early this year, beginning end of January 2007, Perfspot.com has jumped from the traffic-rank of over 100,000 to be a top-300 today! It's daily reach has risen from 0.02% by late April to 0.28% of the world today -- That's more than 10x growth in less than one month!!.

As usual, I wanted to know how will this new web-based software affect Malaysians too (the well-known freaks with regards to online social networking) and here's what I've learned: Malaysians who form one of the largest contributing groups to Friendster (#2 in Malaysia as well as constituting over 20% of all Friendster's unique visits!*), YouTube (#5, but only a mere 1% of world's traffic) and Myspace (#7 in Malaysia) aren't being left out of this one, as expected. Today, Malaysia contributes 2.5% of the traffic to Perfspot (hence, a top-10 country) making Perfspot, its new top under 500 most popular web destination in Malaysia.

This site grew so fast that it has to be one of the very few top-500 web destinations that is not yet listed in Netscape/Dmoz Open Directory (that boast its huge number of editors exceeding tens of thousands, worldwide). In fact, Alexa itself and even Google have not caught up with the fast-growing number of web pages that have placed links to Perfspot.com. (Alexa is listing ONLY ONE today!).

How did Perfspot achieved this amazing feat (becoming the FASTEST-GROWING WEBSITE)? Can anybody else repeat this or come close? Note that this company has released only ONE press release so far, and even then, it was only after its already successful growth trend during the prior few weeks. We'll continue to learn....

If you've read my previous blog, you'd know that there's at least one global web-20 company, or more specifically in the social bookmarking field (eg. Del.icio.us, Digg, Technorati etc.) that is making the world's headlines off Kuala Lumpur. Looks like the competition is still on for social or business networking industry (dominated by the likes of LinkedIn, Ryze, Ecademy, Xing (formerly OpenBC etc.). Will the next one come out from Malaysia to answer the most recent call from our Prime Minister/MDEC's chief (during the MSC-IAP meeting this week) to establish our first global ICT icon?

Read on the following Press Release.

Nearly a Million Users Join the Perf Revolution

TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--PerfSpot.com, LLC, a new social networking site that has experienced tremendous growth with more than 30,000 users on average signing up daily, announced today that it is the number one fastest growing Web site on the Internet according to Alexa.com's Weekly Traffic Rankings. PerfSpot.com now has more than 940,000 members and projects more than 7 million members by the end of the year.

Each week Alexa.com identifies "Movers and Shakers" on the Internet, the top Web sites moving up or down in the traffic rankings as measured by the change in the number of users visiting the site. For the week of May 7, 2007, PerfSpot moved up 151 percent, making it the fastest growing Web site on the Internet. Also according to Alexa, over the past three months, site traffic has escalated by 6,702 percent. It is the 588th most visited Web site on the Internet, based on a total of approximately 101 million Web sites in the world.

"We have been growing by more than 30,000 members daily and expect that number to increase to 75,000 daily once we complete the site translations in 21 languages over the next 45 days," said Hart Cunningham, CEO, PerfSpot.com. "We believe one of the main reasons members love PerfSpot is their ability to choose different privacy settings on their PerfSpot Web site. This allows each member to fully control what content each friend or family member has access to."

With PerfSpot, members can make new friends and network with people with similar interests from one simple-to-use Web site. Members can also upload photo albums, post and watch videos, listen to new music, review the latest news and create personalized maps of their favorite cities. PerfSpot.com provides features not found on any other site, such as completely customizable security access setup and PerfNights, a photo service that captures nightlife around the world and posts the images online.

In addition to its host of features, PerfSpot boasts a multi-national customer support department with more international offices under development so as to accommodate the expansive growth.

* MySpace is arguably the most popular social networking website in the world today, but Friendster is the undisputed king many South East Asian (SEA) countries. Residents in four ASEAN countries, Philipines, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia contribute about 80% of all web audienceship or traffic that Friendster gets today. At present, MySpace is ranked top-5 most visited web destination, and Friendster is world's top-24. Ekawan, the closest local-centric equivalence/contender to Friendster and Myspace, is ranked ~top-250 in Malaysia and ~top-30,000 worldwide. FriendX is another Malaysia-grown social networking portal worth mentioning here.

LAST NOTE: With these shocking stats being presented upon the world, I'd say if a social-centric company wants to grow quickly today, it's a good idea to locate itself or open a marketing and/or r&d branch in one of these four SEA countries. A few Web 2.0 companies have realized this growing trend, and have indeed opened offices in Kuala Lumpur/Penang, Singapore, Jakarta, Manila etc. As a Malaysian, I'll say: "Welcome to Malaysia, Truly Asia!" (Pssst: It's Visit Malaysia Year this time as we celebrate our 50th year of nationhood, come this coming 31 AUG 2007 -- since our 1957 National Independence Year).
